Haiti Earthquake Information
(as of 01-14-2010)

The devastating 7.0 earthquake that hit Haiti on Tuesday, January 12, 2010, has generated a lot of concern, naturally, and with it questions about what the Seventh-day Adventist Church is doing to assist. Members in the United States are also wondering what they can do to help. We hope the following will help you find the answers.

First of all; ADRA is the Seventh-day Adventist Church's international disaster assistance agency.  Adventist Community Services Disaster Response (ACSDR) is the church's agency in the United States, Canada and Bermuda, and is not involved in this international response. But ADRA is on the ground and involved already in meeting the needs of victims in Haiti. The best way to help the people of Haiti is to go to adra.org and find the buttons on their site that will allow you to donate financially for this event. Please realize that there is no cost effective way to collect clothes or any other items to send to Haiti. Therefore none of our ACS centers will be able to receive goods with the intent of sending them to Haiti.

Also, for people seeking to find family members in Haiti we have been given the following number as a resource for Americans seeking loved one in this country. This number was provided by National Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster (NVOAD) a multi-agency organization of which ACSDR is a member, and which services only in the United States.

Adventist Community Services Disaster Response serves victims of disaster without regard to religion or creed, race, age, or sex. ACSDR is able to serve effectively by utilizing a nationwide network of Adventist Community Services centers, more that 50 of which are located in Michigan.

Michigan ACSDR provides several services to disaster victims and their communities.
·         Chain Saw Response Team can help after major wind storms by helping cut up downed trees and remove debris.
·         Mobile Kitchen Team can provide meals to victims or to disaster response personnel.
·         VHF and Emergency Ham Radio Communications are supplied for the Michigan ACSDR team by a Communications Team.
·         Donated goods management and distribution. In Michigan, this service is proved by a team trained in warehouse management, and in the reception of goods from the public and distribution of goods to the survivors of a disaster. Mobile distribution of goods is also available in Michigan.
